FAQ

How many museums are there in Quebec?

There are about 450 non-profit museums and similar institutions (exhibition centres, interpretation sites) in Quebec. Approximately 300 of them are members of the Société des musées québécois.

Is there a directory to Quebec museums?

Definitely! The Société des musées québécois has created an on-line directory with information on its 300 members.

The SMQ also puts out an abundantly illustrated, 248-page tourist guide, with maps and a directory. The Guide to Québec Museums, available from the SMQ and in many museums gift shops and book stores, divides museums up by different tourist regions.

About 12 million people visit Quebec’s museums every year.
For more information, see the results of the survey on attendance at Quebec’s museums, available since 2004 on the Institut de la statistique du Québec site.

I would like to make a donation to a museum. Whom should I contact?

If you would like to make a donation to a museum, we suggest that you speak to someone at the institution in question.
The SMQ cannot act as an intermediary between donors and museums.

I have some valuable pieces. Where can I get information on conserving them?

The Centre de conservation du Québec provides information on how to safely protect your valuable pieces. See Quelques conseils pour vos objets précieux (in French).

How can I have a piece evaluated?

To get an evaluation of your pieces, contact a professional, e.g. an antique dealer, appraiser or auctioneer.

If you would like to know more about and be able to identify your heirlooms, the Musée de la civilisation has a program called Patrimoine à domicile (in French), with different documentation and reference tools and even the chance to meet with collection professionals. Note that the Musée de la civilisation does not perform monetary evaluations of objects.
