Nature and Environment

Map of thematic routes

Since the dawn of human memory, each generation has been rearranging, transforming and remodelling the environment it leaves behind for its descendants. These museums, in natural or recreated environments, have the mandate to conserve and explain the ecosystems that highlight the vital interdependence between humans, animals, their habitats, resources and the land.

Green museums

Better understanding means more effective action. The environment has entered the museum.

Subjects that are part of the present.

Landscapes that bear the traces of the impact of human intervention.

Surroundings that awaken ecological awareness.

"Geologists estimate that the 'dinosaur civilization' dominated our planet for 170 million years. It is becoming increasingly improbable that Homo sapiens civilization can last longer than a few more centuries, perhaps a few millennia. The only chance of long-term survival requires a complete rejection of our wasteful civilization."

René Dumont, L’environnement entre au musée,  Jean Davallon, Gérald Granmont Bernard Schiele (1992).

There are close to seven million items in natural science collections in Quebec. 49% of them are in museums' botanical, fossil and mineralogical collections, in order of size.

These are places where you can explore our unique natural heritage, in many regions of Quebec.
